Clare grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York; from 1932 to 1936 he attended Arlington High School. During his high school athletic career he played basketball, baseball and football, lettering in all three sports. After graduating from high school Clare played city league baseball and semi-pro basketball. After moving to Osnabruck Township, Clare took up coaching both basketball and fastball. In 1961, Clare coached the Ingleside Tinny's BA Juniors to the league championships of Cornwall's Centre City Softball League.
In 1958, he started coaching basketball at Osnabruck District High School. Clare coached at ODHS for an eight year period and his teams won four league championships. During this time period his teams also won four invitational tournaments.
